If you’ve dabbled in Facebook at all recently, you’ve almost certainly heard of or seen the new Facebook Timeline. At this point, you may be wondering, what is Timeline, and what does it have to do with my business?

The entire profile layout for Facebook will be changing, for personal and business pages. You may have noticed the change on some personal profiles already, and as of March 30th, each and every account will be experiencing the shift.

So, what is Timeline? Timeline is the same old Facebook with a different organization and some additions. The first and most noticeable change is the addition of a cover photo. Your cover photo will stretch across the top of the page, serving as a banner for your business. Unlike any other banner, your cover photo CANNOT display price or purchase information, contact information, calls-to-action, or references to Facebook features such as “like” or “share;” think of it as a solely visual representation, not necessarily an advertisement. The ideal size for your cover image is 851px by 315px. Your profile picture is still present, but at a smaller size, in a square in the left corner of your cover photo. Directly beneath this is a description of your business, then links to photos, likes, map of your location, and any other applications you add to this section (we’ll address these in a bit)

Another added feature is the size of your posts. All your posts will now be a bit bigger, and if there’s a particular post you’d like to draw visitors’ attention to, you can “highlight” it (by clicking the star) and have it stretch across the width of your page. Another new way to emphasize a post you’d like to get noticed is “pinning”. You can “pin” a post to the top of your page, where it will stay for up to a week.

You can set company milestones, that tell people about the major things that have happened in your business’ life. This helps tell your story, and makes your page more engaging for visitors.

New applications are also being offered through the new Facebook Timeline. Your page can boast up to twelve applications, and display four on the main page beneath your cover photo. Unlike before, you can now choose the order of your apps or the pictures displaying them. You can change these images to be more eye catching, or to follow a theme.

Curious about where the name “Timeline” comes from? To the right of the image above, you can see on the right the actual “timeline” of your page. This feature let’s visitors and business’ find things by year, then month. It makes navigating a page much easier.
