In the United States specifically, 98% of the online population is connected through social networks. As of October 2011, nearly 1 in every 5 minutes spent online is now spent on social networking sites. This current 19% is a giant leap since March 2007, when only 6% of time online was dedicated to social networks. According to Social Media Industry Report for 2011, a survey of 3,300 marketers conducted by Social Media Jungle, 90% of marketers said that social media was important to their businesses. 67% of small business owners surveyed strongly agreed that their social networking was important to their business.What benefits were found for business? 88% of marketers indicated that their social media efforts have generated more exposure for their businesses. Improving traffic and subscribers was second, with 72%. Nearly two thirds indicated a rise in search engine rankings, and 51% found that social media generated qualified leads.
